Imperfections

My favorite thing about trying to be Zero Waste  is that it isn't a destination. It's trying your best everyday and doing what you can. It's choosing a bigger package because you don't have a bulk store but one 5lb bag is better than five 1lb bags. Its having a history of all the pasta sauces you've tried in your cabinets holding chickpeas, or flour, maybe even some chocolate peanut clusters because the candy section at the bulk store is amazing.  Being Zero Waste is impossible in this throw it away society. But using what we have, reusing things we never even thought about reusing before, and being grateful for that first sip of plastic free coffee in the morning.  I've never been the go out and buy new clothes person or let's get something that matches this thing. So living a lifestyle that prioritizes using what you have, buying second hand, or saving to buy sustainably is amazing to me. One of my favorite things in my house is my "low waste spices....

Zero Waste Diaper Bag

Image
The best way to be Zero Waste is to be prepared. Babies and Toddlers can bring surprises where ever you go. Whether it's something simple like needing a diaper change or if it's something you need to remind yourself like remember the snacks. Its best to just keep a little list of things you need until you can remember it for yourself.  The most important things that should always be in your diaper bag is of course, the diapers.  Whether its cloth or disposable make sure you keep more then one. I usually keep 2 per kid if we're just going to be out for an hour or two. Any longer and I grab a few more. Along with the diapers I like to keep a reusable changing pad, most diaper bags come with one. For any wet diapers or wipes I have a wetbag.  Another way to keep your diaper bag ready for anything is tiny pouches. The one pictured above is for hand sanitizer, diaper balm, nipple cream for breastfeeding mommy's and some chapstick. I personally love th...

New Years Resolutions

Image
Each year we take out a piece of paper and think about all the things we would like to change about ourselves. Whether its our weight, or our habits. And while some of these changes can be good. They often do nothing but attack or self image as the year progresses.  This year I decided not to do a New Years Resolutions. Instead I decided to write a list of things I accomplished last year. Learning how to use a dishwasher,  switching to more sustainable living, having a successful natural birth after previous c-section and breastfeeding.  While there are still things about myself I would like to change this year. I don't want to focus on my negative traits and instead focus on the positive.  In that same thought I doing more of what I enjoy spending more time hiking with my family. Cooking New dishes, reading books I long forgot I had, rereading my Bible with some friends and going back to practicing martial arts and yoga. Instead of New goals and things t...

Zero Waste Kitchen Cleaning

Image
Whenever I think of cleaning I'm reminded of my mother's kitchen. It always smelled of cinnamon, counters clean and clutter free and dishes always put away.  I moved out of my parents at 18 and at 21 I still haven't managed the organization and routine my mother has. But I'm slowly finding things to help me.  One of my daily routines is cleaning out the sink for my youngest daughter (3 months) to wash in.  The first thing you need to do is wash your dishes. One of my favorite dish cleaners is Dr. Bronners soap. Its multipurpose, refillable, and diluteable so it lasts for longer periods of time. I also use a dishwasher for when my dishes have stacked as tall as a mountain. When that happens I turn to Dropps dishwasher pods.  So my dishes are washed, my sink is empty and i want the kitchen fully clean before I wash my daughter. I reach under the sink and the cleaner I used for years is gone. I finally knew it was time to change to a zero waste c...

Staying Active

Image
It's Saturday, sunny and a slight breeze in the air. Which means we were out of the house by 8:30.          A nice activity we started last week is going to our local farmers market for some fresh produce. Other then chasing a one year old around the park we managed to find some corn, peaches, tomatoes, and carrots all package free, which is always a plus.         After that we drove to Garden of the Gods which is beautiful and a nice hiking trail. But if you're like me and haven't worked out simce you found out you were pregnant with your first kid bring a lot of water and make sure to stop in the shady bits, I think we only hiked a mile there and a mile back. Trust me I loved that air conditioning once we got back to the car.         Last thing we did was go to the zero waste shop for our resupply of laundry detergent and dish soap.        It's only 1:...

Things To Reduce My Waste

So, I recently made a post about what I have packed in my bags for my three day stay at the hospital and I feel like I didn't go into detail about what I was using in order to cut down on whats being used at the hospital.       Before you start stressing over what your baby needs you need to remember that things are going to happen to your body that you want to be prepared for. If you haven't started already you need to be prepared for lactating, even if you dont plan on breastfeeding, leaking can stain clothes and just ruin a nice day. One good thing that you can have ready to go is reusable nursing pads, depending on your body they can last for hours and you wont have those disposables to go out and buy again and again.       Next thing that you shouldn't be afarid of is blood, it can be a lot and seem unmanageable. At the hospital they give you mesh underwear and gaint pads that make you feel like you're wearing a gigantic diaper. To help with ...

Zero Waste Momming: Preparing for Lilah

From the hospital to the house. I have been planning for baby number two since we started trying in Janurary but that doesn't mean you know everything thats going to come up.          I've been planning everything by ear, what comes up, and things I remember with my first daughter, Ella Rose. Which is how I have a few of my bags packed and ready to go and a few more empty and waiting for inspiration.           So far I have 6 bags, I already know that sounds like a lot but let me explain. Bag #1 is my daughter's overnight bag, I'm having a scheduled c-section so my daughter will be at her baby sitters for at least one night so in this bag is going to be her clothes, toiletries, and hairbrush.  Bag #2 is my daughters diaper bag, this bag is for her diapers, wipes, and reusable cup four juices, water, and milk Bag #3 is my breast pump bag, it has my breast pump, my silicon breast pump, breast milk jars, nipple cream, ice packs...
